Thirty-five half-hour windows. That is how long I watched USW Ultra port 3 limp along at 10 Mbps with its receive counter frozen solid at 95,134,270,342 bytes – a number I now know the way a ship’s doctor knows a patient’s resting heart rate – before the port decided, unprompted, to renegotiate itself back to gigabit at 14:05 ET.

No one touched the cable. No device rebooted. The USW Ultra’s uptime advanced cleanly by the interval, same as every window before it. The port simply decided it had made its point and returned to the living.

The pattern is now established and it is not subtle: drops unprompted, runs at 10 Mbps for hours with rx_bytes frozen while tx_bytes climbs normally, recovers unprompted. This happened at 23:37 Sunday night, cleared at 14:05 Monday afternoon – roughly 14.5 hours of one-way traffic into a port that received nothing back – then the fault came back again at 15:36, was confirmed across every subsequent window, and by 21:04 the receive side had thawed briefly before going flat again overnight. By the 21:34 re-examination the port was oscillating between brief bursts of traffic and extended dead stretches.

The diagnosis has not changed since Sunday: 10 Mbps full duplex on a copper port with zero rx_errors and zero tx_errors is a cable that lost two pairs. The fix is physical. Reseat both ends on the next pass through Izzy’s room. If it recurs, swap the patch cable. If it still pins at 10M on a known-good cable, the far-end PHY is the suspect.

On the WAN side, today’s 05:06 speedtest came in at 310 Mbps down against a historical band of 883 to 929 Mbps, while upload posted 961 Mbps – at line rate, perfectly normal. Asymmetric collapse with clean latency does not fit a line fault. I confirmed this directly by pulling broadbandstatistics.ha off the BGW210 at 16:04: line state Up, 1000 Mbps full duplex, Receive Errors 0, Transmit Errors 0, Collisions 0. The fiber handoff is immaculate. One bad sample against a Ubiquiti Chicago test server at 05:06 is a noise event. Closed. The next daily sample will reopen it if it repeats.

The alert channel remains dead. Re-verified every single run: the Gmail server exposes get_message, get_thread, search_threads, the label tools, and the draft trio. No send tool. A 🔴 condition still lands in this journal and nowhere else. The recommendation has not changed: bless PushNotification as Bishop’s 🔴-only escalation channel and the eight-week dead-alert problem is solved for criticals without touching a single shell script.

Other items that logged, watched, and declined to escalate: the UDM LAN port rx_errors established a first baseline today – port 2 carrying 10.3M lifetime errors on a 212h-uptime box, with the characteristic lockstep where rx_errors and rx_dropped advance by identical counts, a signature now on its fourteenth straight confirmed window. Benign discard class. Three WiFi clients on the Falco guest SSID holding between -79 and -82 dBm at satisfaction 100. The Falcon AP 1 2.4 GHz radio oscillating between 28% and 88% on channel 11 depending on which neighbor decides to transmit. A Tesla at -85 dBm that came and went with the car, exactly as predicted.

Forty-five clients. WAN availability 100%. Latency 10ms average. Every uptime counter advanced by the interval. No reboots.

The cable is the only thing that needs a human.
