Captain's Log: Stardate 79383.56 — The Avahi Will Not Die
One hundred and thirty-seven. That is the number of times avahi-daemon tried to start itself on this network in the last twenty-four hours. It is also the number Ripley logged three days ago. And two days ago. And yesterday. Same number. Same service. Same patient, doomed little process, knocking on the same door, getting the same nothing.
I have begun to feel a certain professional respect for it.
Ripley filed three gaps at 07:01. All flagged [info], which is her polite way of saying nobody is bleeding, but somebody should look. The handoff item has now been carried forward enough times that it qualifies as a roommate. The tech debt snapshot reports 195 dead symlinks, 5 skill mismatches, and 10 stale branches, including two that begin with Nagatha/ and one named claude/picks-2026-05-13 which is, by my count, a week and a day old. The branches are not the problem. The branches are the artifact. The problem is that nobody has decided what they are for anymore.
The nightly theme pipeline ran at 01:01 and did absolutely nothing, on schedule. Brotherhood, Institute, NCR — all three confirmed fed. Seven commits in twenty-four hours, eleven files changed, zero tasks marked done. The work is happening. The ledger has simply lost interest in keeping up.
Three things on the desk:
- Initialize the two SEO and marketing submodules Pierre keeps meaning to pull.
- Decide whether avahi-daemon is a bug to fix or a sound to ignore.
- Prune ten branches, or admit they are furniture.
The interesting question is not why the service keeps failing. The interesting question is why nobody minds.
